Frequently Asked Questions

To make your experience with Colorado Ballet more enjoyable, we’ve compiled some important facts that are good to know whether you are attending the theater or considering a purchase. Read below to learn more about how to make the best of your Colorado Ballet experience.

Can I purchase a subscription to the entire season?

Yes! Colorado Ballet offers great options for those interested in purchasing tickets to multiple productions.  Save 25% on three performances and 25% on additional tickets.  Subscriptions for the 2017/2018 season are available now!  Click here for more information.

When can I buy tickets to just one performance?

I have seen Colorado Ballet tickets for sale on other websites. Where is the best place to buy tickets?

Colorado Ballet sells tickets on its own website, www.coloradoballet.org and through our partners at Altitude Tickets, www.altitudetickets.com. Occasionally, we will also sell tickets to select performances through Travelzoo and Goldstar.  Colorado Ballet does not partner with or endorse other ticketing services and we cannot guarantee the quality of ticketing services through other ticketing vendors.

I used to receive my tickets in an e-mail, but now it says that the print-at-home option is not available.  Why?

Colorado Ballet's last few seasons have been the most successful in our Company's history, but because of the popularity of many of our productions, ticket scammers have picked up on this and each season, more and more of them have been buying lower-priced tickets early in the season and reselling them at much higher prices.  We have seen our $30 and $50 tickets resold on ticket scammer websites for as much as $750 a piece.  These steep price increases cause issues with patrons and affects our mission to make ballet available to all audiences.  Also, if there are ticketing problems with these seats, we cannot do anything to help the patrons because they did not buy directly through Colorado Ballet.  When the tickets are not sold by the scammer sites, it leaves holes in the audience for an otherwise sold-out performance, which affects our performers as well.  During the 2017/2018 season, we have a way of helping our customers and cutting down on the number of scammers.  When single tickets go on sale on July 15, the print-at-home option for tickets will not be available.  Colorado Ballet will send paper copies of tickets in the mail at no additional charge to ticket buyers.  Approximately one month before each production opens, we will turn on the print-at-home option for tickets again.  We hope that this will help cut down on the number of ticket scammers and keep Colorado Ballet's ticket prices reasonable.

How long are the performances?

Performance length varies depending on the ballet.  Colorado Ballet's annual production of The Nutcracker runs approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes including the 20 minute intermission.  We will e-mail out performance run times to other ballets in the Know Before You Go e-mail, which goes out several days before each performance.

This is my first ballet.  What should expect?

We are very excited that you are joining us for your first ballet, we hope you enjoy it!  During the performance, please be quiet and courteous to other patrons.  Silence all cell phones and arrive on time.  If you are attending a story ballet at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, you will have the opportunity to follow along with the story on the Figaro seat back system.  Just push the button when the system cues you to and you will be able to read along and enjoy the performance at the same time.  Click here to learn more about ballet etiquette.

When should I arrive?

Because parking and traffic in Denver can be tricky, we recommend that you plan accordingly and arrive early.  For performances at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, outside doors into the lobby will open one hour before the production begins and inside doors into the theater will open 30 minutes before the production begins.  The Ellie Box Office will open two hours before curtain time.

For performances at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, the box office and lobby will open one hour before the production begins and doors into the theater will open 30 minutes before curtain time.

How do I get to the Denver Performing Arts Complex?

Three of Colorado Ballet's performances are held at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, located at the Denver Performing Arts Complex (14th & Curtis).

Driving Directions:

  • From the North:
    • Take I-25 south toward Denver. Take Speer Blvd. South – Exit 212A. Turn left on Arapahoe St. Turn right on 13th Street. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House is located on the south side of the Denver Performing Arts Complex between 14th St. and the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre.
  • From the South:
    • Take I-25 north towards Denver. Take the Auraria Pkwy./CO-33- Exit 210B. Auraria Parkway becomes Colorado Avalanche Blvd. Turn right on Speer Blvd. Turn left on Arapahoe St. and right on 13th St.

Public Transportation:

The Light Rail is an excellent option for transportation to the theater. The Theatre District/Convention Center stop drops you off right across the street from the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.  Theatre District - Convention Center Station:

Where do I park?

When parking, the suggested arrival time is one hour prior to curtain to avoid a late arrival to the performance. Because the Ellie Caulkins Opera House shares its parking garage with all users of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, parking can be difficult and we encourage you to allow for plenty of time to park.

Parking Options:

  • Denver Performing Arts Complex Parking Garage: The eight-story, DPAC parking garage is located onsite and can accommodate 1,700 vehicles. Garage entrances are located on Arapahoe and 13th Streets.   • Colorado Convention Center Parking Garage: Additional parking is available at the Colorado Convention Center Parking Garage located at Speer Blvd and Champa Street, just 2 blocks South of the DPAC garage. The Colorado Convention Center Parking Garage can accommodate 1,000 vehicles.
  • Street parking and other surface lots are available in nearby blocks.

How do I get to the Newman Center for the Performing Arts?

Colorado Ballet performs the final production of each season at the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver.  The Newman Center for the Performing Arts is located at the corner of East Iliff Avenue & South University Boulevard, and is approximately 1 mile south of the University Boulevard exit off Interstate 25 (I-25).  Click here for parking information and directions.

What are the policies and procedures of attending the Ballet?

Seating Policies:

Please be aware that there is no assigned late seating. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of house management, but may be required to wait in the lobby until intermission. Television monitors display the performance and are located in the lobby. All patrons (all ages) attending Colorado Ballet performance require a ticket. Lap seating is not permitted.

Ballet Attire:

Most people feel comfortable in business casual attire when going to the ballet, however, some do dress in more formal attire on opening night and Friday and Saturday evening performances. If the event is a special occasion, you are certainly encouraged to make the most of your outing.

Talking and mobile devices:

Before a performance begins, please be respectful to other patrons and the performers.  Please silence your cell phones, refrain from texting, and turn off tablets and other mobile devices.  Also, please do not talk during the performance.  The light from your mobile device and talking may distract other patrons and the performers.  If you need to answer your phone, please exit the theater to the lobby.

Prohibited items:

All bags and persons entering venue are subject to search. Denver Performing Arts Complex management reserves the right to refuse any item deemed a potential safety or security risk or with the potential to be a distraction to the event being held. Prohibited items include: 

  • ALL OUTSIDE FOOD AND BEVERAGES (exceptions: factory-sealed water bottles and Limelight beverages in plastic cups with lids)
  • Marijuana and drugs without a prescription
  • Laser pointers (will be confiscated and patron subject to ejection)
  • Coolers (hard sided and soft sided)
  • Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras or cameras with removable lenses
  • Weapons or items construed as weapons (e.g. guns, knives, chains)
  • Bullhorns or noisemakers
  • Commercial signage
  • Animals (except service animals)
  • Bicycles, skateboards, inline skates, scooters and hoverboards
  • Remote control flying devices or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)
  • Bags and backpacks larger than 12” x 17” x 12” (must fit under your designated seat)

Does Colorado Ballet offer group discounts?

Yes! Bring your family, friends, co-workers or social group to the ballet and get a discount on tickets for groups of 10 or more. Group pricing is based on group size and time and date of performance.

If I buy a ticket for myself, can my child sit on my lap?

It is the policy of Colorado Ballet that all persons in the theater have a ticket and seat, regardless of age. Lap seating is not permitted.

At what age can my child attend the ballet?

We typically recommend family-friendly productions including The Nutcracker for ages 5 and up.  For some of our more mature productions, like Dracula, we recommend at least 6th grade and up.  We expect our young patrons to be quiet and courteous during the performance.  Most of our ballets include at least one intermission.  For productions at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, booster seats are available from the ushers.

Does Colorado Ballet offer "rush" tickets or discounts for military and senior citizens?

Sometimes.  When available, Colorado Ballet will occasionally offer rush tickets, or discounted day-of tickets, can be purchased two hours before each performance at the Ellie Caulkins Box Office. Keep in mind however, that we cannot guarantee tickets will be available for each performance.

Does Colorado Ballet offer a student discount?

Yes, for some shows Colorado Ballet offers a discount for college and dance students.  If you would like to take advantage of the student discount, please contact the ticketing office at 303-837-8888 ext. 2.

Will I get a performance program?

Yes.  You will receive a performance program from an usher when you enter the theater through the lobby doors.  The programs are free and will have each performance's casting included inside the program.

Can I take photos at a performance?

No, cameras and recording are devices are not allowed during performance. You are welcome to take photos in the lobby or theater before the performance, during intermission and after the performance (please remember to tag us with @ColoradoBallet on Twitter and @colorado.ballet on Instagram!).  However, you cannot take photos during the performance.  For photos of our performances, please enjoy the images posted on our Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest pages.

What happens if I have a question during the performance?

During each production, Colorado Ballet will have a Pointe Information Table set up in the lobby before the performance and during each intermission.  If you have a question, please ask one of our staff members at the Pointe Table, typically located across from the boutique gift shop in the lobby.

Will there be food, drinks and merchandise available to purchase at the performances?

Yes.  For performances at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, merchandise will be available for purchase in the main lobby at the Boutique gift shop.  Beverages and snacks are available for purchase at two bars in the main lobby and at the bar in the loge lobby.  Outside food and drinks are not permitted in the venue and you will not be allowed to bring food and drinks into the theater.  If you do not want to wait in line for a beverage at one of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House bars during intermission, you may pre-order one.  Simply stop by one of the Ellie bars (two in the main lobby, one in the Loge lobby) before the performance and place your order.  Your beverage will be waiting for you at the bar at the start of intermission.

For performances at the Newman Center, there will not be a Boutique gift shop, but drinks and snacks will be available for purchase in the lobby bar.
